I was getting popping back through the carb on my 97 sp 500. I took the top end off the motor and found the centre lobe of the cam was shaved off almost level. Talking to my local dealer, he said this is quite common with machines like mine because they're only splash lubricated. Anybody else have to repalce the cam?

Yes, this is a somewhat common problem. I know of several SP 500 H.O's that have had the cam replaced. My H.O. had about 400 miles on it when the center lobe went flat. It cost me about $250 to replace the cam and rocker arms.
