I HAVE HAD SEVERAL PEOPLE TELL ME THAT THE 250 2-STROKE MOTOR POLARIS USES IS NOT RELIABLE.I HAVE A 1996 TRAILBOSS AND HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS EXCEPT FOR AN OCCASIONAL PING. I ATTRIBUTE THAT TO POOR FUEL QUALITY AND MOST OF MY RECENT RIDING HAS BEEN SLOW SPEED TRAILING. ANY COMMENTS?

Actually I have heard and seen different, the 250 motor in my Xplorer has been bullet proof , and anyone that I know that has it has been bullet proof also. I know people who get 5 or more years with notihng more than a spark plug replacement. Mine 250 carries two people all the time, never hesitates. You say yours is a 1996 , has the motor had any work. I would bet not. The 250 is a great motor. It is part of the reason I bought the Xplorer 250. From what i have seen the 250 take and ask for more i was sold.

Our 1991 Trailboss 250 is just dandy. The motor is solid. I did a compression test last summer and it is slightly low. We are talking about 9 years of use here, this ATV has plowed snow for many years and ridden hard on the trails as well. I will not be rebuilding the top end just yet. Maybe next winter.

I must say, this is one very reliable engine.
