Clutch Springs and Belts
#1
Quick question about primary (drive) clutch springs. How does a person choose from so many? I bought my 1995 Scrambler 400 4x4 a little over two years ago. I have rebuilt it, but I am not happy with the performance. It runs like a raped ape, but just doesn't seem to maintain the rpms. Takes off fast, revs great, then seems to bog down and slowly built speed. I used to be able to eat up a 400ex, but not it takes a lot longer to just catch it. I was told that the spring might be worn out. It was a green spring (the way I bought it). I took apart the secondary (driven) clutch, cleaned it up and replaced the buttons. A lot better. I have now replaced the green spring with a gold/silver. Seems to be better, maintains rpm, but doesn't seem to built speed as fast as it used to. Is the gold/silver too strong? Also, I replaced the belt with a Polaris belt and had to add two shims to the driven clutch. Thanks for the help!

Did you get the spring back in the original holes? If it is looser then the rpm will drop too much to keep the moter spinning at max performance. If it is too tight the motor will be reving higher that the optimal rpm. Either way it won't seem to accelerate as strong as it is capable. It is hard to clutch a polaris with out a tach. That is why most people sell clutch kits for different mods. The powerband moves with mods and clutchs have to be finetuned.
