Has anyone played with their timing on 2 stroke?

In my forever quest for more power I am considering advancing the timing a bit on my bike.Has anyone played with their timing on their 2 stroke and if so,how much did you advance it.Are their any negetive effects other than going too far and burning a hole in the piston? The stator is slotted so the timing can be changed a bit by just moving the stator in the slots.

Actually on the full race 400's we retard the timing 2 degrees for around a 2hp gain. Now I don't know if the ifnition mapping on your 300 is the same or what. These results were proven on the dyno. You assume all responsibility if your wing ding goes boom bang.

sparkys, just my 2 cents and guys correct me if im wrong but if u advance it it will spark before tdc and work against crankshaft rotation.if u retard it the cylinder will already be heading back down thus speeding the process up.

I'm not sure how much different timing affects power on a two stroke compared to a four stroke engine, but it is well known that advancing the timing will usually increase power. When I dyno tuned my mustang I made 7 more rwhp by going from 14 degrees to 19 degrees BTDC. There are different factors that affect whether timing will help or not like the efficieny of the combustion chamber. The downside to advancing the ignition is the increased chance of detonation, which leads to blown head gaskets and holes in the pistons. Again, I'm new to the two stroke engine scene and I don't know if these facts carry over.

More timing gives more torque. On my drag car I used to run a "high speed retard" on the timing to retard it 2 degrees in 3rd gear. (No jokes about the "high speed retard" behind the driver's wheel!! LOL!)
