porting is it worth the money for just low end
#1
i have a sportsman 400 2 stroke. it has been a beast of a machine for mud riding. i am having to do a top end job, it has been bored 50 over right now. i sent cylinder off today to rick ritter, to have cylinder bored and put in a swaintech coated weisco piston in and head work done. i have right now a dynoport pipe,v-force reeds and reed spacer,uni-filter.i will be going with premix using amsoil 80 to 1. I have stock carb and going to single cable as well. it has a 200 main jet in right now, and needle is in first from top position.was wandering what main jet and needle postion i need to go to.my manuel says 200 is stock main jet. i dont beleve that. i also run 4 28s outlaws with no problem, i bought epi big wheel kit last year and never put it in. i want to put it in now. will this be a good idea, will this be compatable with what i will be having when i get cylinder back from rick. i am not interested in haveing alot of top end just low and mid will be fine with me. any thought would be much appricated. you can check out my bike at http://photos.yahoo.com/bigrych9

Since you have the pipe and other flow enhancing mods, the jetting in the manual should be ignored. Check your plug to see if you're running rich, lean, or right on. Also an EGT gauge is something that you can use in combination with the plug readings. Another tip which is widely shared is to try to stick with one supplier for your engine/clutch mods. RCR and HPD know how their pipes run, and sell clutch kits and other mods to work in harmony with them....kinda like one happy quad symphony, zooom, zoom.

maximus,
(nice handle by the way, it's from one of my favorite movies) I was kind of upset that they discontinued the original Sportsman 400, it was and is a really nice machine. Porting is really a way to get more midrange and top end power. If you want low end power, get a big bore kit. Because of the fact they have to bore the machine out so big and the fact that the ports are angled upwards, boring a machine out would be your best bet for low end power. Boring a machine lowers the port height, giving it more low end power. Nothing against Rick at RCR (he's a REALLY great guy), but Aaen makes the best "big bore" kits out there. You could try the 440 kit and move up to the 470 kit at a later date.
Hope this helps!

thanks for info. yall are right rick will not sell you anything you do not need. i real like that, i wish every salesman was like that. i talked to him today and i am not going to get any porting done, just bore job and carb bored, and he will look at my epi clutch kit to make sure it is compatibly with the mods that i am haveing done. i have dynoport pipe and was going to go with rcr pipe, he said dynoport was good pipe for low end. now that is an honest person. he has my business from now on.
