While you do have a point that Polaris is the higher maintainance machine, it also has 10" of rear suspension travel. This alone requires the need for a chain. Shaft drive is nice when you're talking about 4" of suspension tavel in the rear, but it starts becoming a reliability problem anytime you get above 6" of rear suspension travel. Using the Yamaha Wolverine as an example, those machines are constantly going through U-joints because of the severe driveline angles.
Add to the fact that Polaris has true four wheel drive, a decent suspension system (over double front and rear suspension over the Bayou), a transmission that is always in the right "gear" and about 3 times the horsepower of the Bayou and you have a mud machine that the Bayou can't touch. Now if you're talking pure utility, the Bayou might have the edge, but then again if you want a utility machine, just go with the Sportsman.
