My kid's Sportsman 90 lacks "Ummmph." A few weeks back they ran it through a puddle...a lot...

The machine still runs, but after it warms up it seems to lose all power. Can barely move with my 12 year old on it. I've replaced the air filter and the plug and got a little more power out, but not much.

Anyone have any idea's I can try before I drag the thing to the dealer?

Actually, mine didn't come with a restrictor either at the header or the exhaust, I checked for that right after I bought it. I thought the exhaust might be restricted, though, so I removed the screw near the front of the muffler (I beleive it's for clearing out the spark arrestor) and that didn't help either.

I bought my son a 2002 90 Sp. My cousin told me to take out the restrictor out of the exhuast. Where to take it out of? Right out of the engine, or before the muffler? Does it help? What other mods can I do to make it whizz?

First of all I would check the carb to see if there was any crap in the bowl or one of the jets. You said that you replaced the plug and cleaned the air filter so the next step in cleaning the carb. As far as hop-ups from what I understand HPD is in the final stages of a pipe and clutch kit for the scrambler 90, release should be soon. If you want the mods you will have to sign a waiver, from what I have heard they will make the 90 top out around 45mph. hope that this helps you out.

scrap the 90 sportsman
get a real machine.Sorry to sound so negitive but these tiawaniese quads are junk. They're really ony good small quads are the trx 90 honda,lt80 suzuki, and 125 Breezee yamaha. I looked long andd hard for my son a good trail quad and the 125 Breeze stood out.Polariss shouuld take a hint from thiss 10+ yrs old machine.

my sons sportmans 90 went through two stators in the firt two months both were covered by warrenty.they told me water was getting in through the cooling fan and shorting it out.well the damn air inlet scoop is right behine the right front Duh.But I talked too this guy builds 50cc and 90cc raceing quads they get them totaly swampted and never had any fail he said most likey it was a bad batch if a box of them gets dropped all it takes a little nick.I also tapped of the two forward faceing air holes. Its been great since, 7 months old now.my boy 8 years old 85 pounds does 34 mph.I would like to know if it is safe to bypass the rev limter and also remove or plugging the oil and premixing 32/1 fuel.

Maybe the"scrap the 90 Sportsman" wasnt intended for me, but when a person buys a brand new machine, last thing he wants to hear is you screwed up and its a piece of junk.

This is a quote from a fellow in another form, This is what he did to his son's scrambler 90.

"i removed the oil tank and blocked off injection and run premix klotz....then with some help from nestle'(the very best)i routed the air intake up to where the oil tank was....put on a moose outer wear and got rid of the nasty air box and little filter...been running like this since last sept....runs better and faster then my youngests
2002 scrammy 90...."

Also he stated that

"also on the stock 90 head pipe....the restricter is about 2 inches from the inlet...easy to cut out...."

Hope that this will help everyone out.
