i am going to 20inch tires and 21s in front, i plan on going from my stock gearing of 12/42 to 13/42 my friend told me that a good gearing is 13/36, by going down on rear sprocket too wouldnt that loose top end? what do you people have for gearing on your tbs, scramblers and sports? i want something with OK Bottom end but really care about the top end, and climbing. thanks

You should try just swapping the 36T rear in first, as I don't think you will have enough umph to turn a 13T front, just me. 13/36 is OE gearring on a 400 I believe.

This is kinda old but yup, that's right. Just like your bike. When you need to go faster you snap the back down to the smaller sprockets.

98trailblazer,

I would go with the smaller back sprocket. IMHO the front sprockets are too much of a pain to change. There is a simple formula: Smaller back sprocket = More speed, Bigger back sprocket = More power, Smaller front sprocket = More power, Bigger front sprocket = more speed.

You could try a 36 tooth rear sprocket along with your 12 tooth front. This will give you a ratio of 3 to 1 (up from your stock gearing of 3.5 to 1). Anything less than the 36 tooth rear sprocket and you are going to lose some serious power. Since you are already "gearing down" with 20" tires (it will slow your quad's top speed down due to the decrease in tire diameter from a 22&quot gearing up would help it regain any lost speed.
