I just read the "What is the difference between atv/cycle oil and auto oil?" thread and you posted that its OK to use auto oil in a 2-stroke gearcase. I was wondering if you know much about Polaris engines and trannys and if its OK to use auto oil in the gearcase of my Xplorer. I have an oil leak and don't want to keep buying the expensive ($10/qt.) stuff if I don't really need it. I talked to Polaris and they said "Just use the Polaris stuff, we've tested other stuff and nothing is as good". I think they are just bs'n me, trying to get me to spend more money in thier shop, cuz they always try to sell me stuff I don't want or need every time I'm there. But that's another story. Anyways, what do you think? OK to use the auto oil or stick with Polaris brand?

SOUNDS LIKE IT WOULD BE CHEAPER IN THE LONG RUN TO FIX THE LEAK.

Maddoggy - It leaks from a bad patch from when the chain snapped and cracked the case. I'm going to try to re-patch it better, but I'm not replacing the side case any time soon. Maybe if I ever take the motor out for any reason I'll do it then. But I'm not going to do all that work just for a small oil leak.

Surveyor - I'll check the manual tonight. I didn't check yet, I just called the Polaris shop and they told me to use the Polaris oil, but of course they're gonna tell me that.

I have been running John Deere Hy-Gard in my Scrambler tranny for two years after a rebuild and no problems. It costs around $1.50 a qt. and I get it cheaper then that because I work for a John Deere dealership.

JD Hy-Gard is the oil that comes in all John Deere tractors. It serves as the tranny lubricant and runs all hyd. functions.

The way I look at it...if it works for thousands of hours on very pricey tractors...it better work on a ATV tranny!

just my 2 cents.

HPD clutch kit

more to come...
