I am helping my brother in law find a good used 4 wheeler. We found a 1998 sportsman 500, in pretty good shape with about 2750 miles on it for $3800. It looks used but not abused. Is that a good deal? What things should we take a closer look at on it? I ride a 89 trailboss 250 4x4 but I havent been around many sportsmans.

Thank you

I would say it is a good deal, you won't find one cheaper unless they don't know what they have. Take a good look at the brakes, axle shafts, and for leaks anywhere around the engine, trans, and front hubs. Try to get the service records from the owner or dealer you are buying it from. I gave $4,500 for my 96 500 Sportsman, but only 850 miles and in like new condition. I would say go for it. Happy Trails.

I think that is steep for a 98 Model. They have the u-joints in the rear end which will not hold up to mud or aggresive tires. You can get a 99 model or 2000 model for around $4000. I would sell my 2000 model with 3 years warranty remaining for $4500 or so. I had a 98 and had constant problems with those rear axels even when i was using stock tires. i know plenty of other with the same problem. If you plan to use it for just trail riding and no mud, water or after market tires, it will probably be ok for you, but I would still go for a 99 or 2000. The 99s and 200s also have an improved electrical system...

my 2 cents.
