I lost reverse Saturday getting hung up on a rut/tree root. I have a 97 Scrambler 400 4wd. I hot rodded it a little trying to get unhung and when I put the atv in reverse, It didn't happen. It didn't make any kind of a noise like something was breaking. If somebody pushes me, It will sometimes engage and reverse kicks in. I noticed before all of this happened, Reverse didn't go in gear exactly like it should. I'd have to rev the motor a little before it would engage. Does this sound like a gear problem, clutch problem, Shifter adjustment problem,..or ???? Need some serious help here. ANy suggestions will be greatly appreciated!!!

First of all, I'd check the adjustment of your shift linkage. If nothing else, disconnect it from the arm in top of the trans, using (I know this sounds crude)a vise-grip with a rag or some protection in the jaws, try shifting the trans. The rag protects the soft aluminum arm in top of the trans. This will tell you whether or not you are getting full throw with the shifter links. If not that, it's probably time to pull the trans, open it up, and take a look. Sorry if I stated the obvious, just trying to get something simple (shifter) out of the loop.
