I just found a mint 1998 400 sport for $2000.00 It has real low hours and is totally stock. It will not go into gear though. When you try to put it into gear it just grinds. What could this be? If it's an easy fix I want to jump on this deal. Please help. Thanks in advance. Darrell

Dalbery,

The easiest fix would be to have the guy knock off $600 off the price of the quad as you'll need a new transmission. The other thing it could be is the shifting linkage rod is either bent or maladjusted.

If you could get the guy to knock off $600 then take the transmission to your dealer to rebuild it. My dealer in Dallas quoted me $200 plus parts to rebuild me 4x4 transmission if I brought it to him. If he had to take it out it would cost over a $1000

Sounds to me like the forward shift dog is worn. Havwe a 96 Sport that had the same problem. If you have any ability it is a simple fix. Go to partsland.com (http://www.partsland.com/index.cgi?N...-400L-GEARCASE) all the parts are listed there.
