Went to the dealer today to look at these two. 425's a 2000 model yr. and 400 is a 2001. The 425 exp. I noticed has an oil leak at the front drive shaft. Is this a common problem for a machine like this with only 2000 miles? The xplorer just had a new head put on it when the guy traded it in cause of a crack in it. They are going through it throughly for me if I want it. Is this a common problem with their 400 2 strokes or has this quad just been beat into the ground in a yr. Really want to buy a Polaris and I want the 2 stroke but am worried if the previous owner might have done irreversible damage to the lower end of the engine that the dealer won't catch. Also for a 2001 the tires show some pretty good wear. Is that telling me it has alot of miles on it or just alot of gravel/roadway driving. Looks to be in good shape besides the tires and head. Also the tie rod ends on the 2000 expedition 425 seemed loose but on the xplorer their not. Any input would be appreciated as this will be my first quad purchase and I can't really afford a new one at the moment except maybe a 250 explorer. Thx in advance......Brian

Personaly I would go with the 400 but I would ask the guy who traded it in first to see way it had a head put on.It could have been hot or something could have broken to mess it up.But the 400 2 stroke is a power house and will surprise you.I have both a 425 and a 400 2 stroke and the 400 will screem but the 425 has better trail maners.Plus the 425 you are looking at isnt an automatic. Hope that helps a litle

i have a 2000 expedition 425- i think you should go with the 400, only because the 425 sounds like its in bad condition. otherwise, if you were buying a new quad, the 425 would be a way better choice. if you like the 5 speed manual than go with it, the oil leek can be fixed. I really do think the 425 is a better machine, but this one sounds like it's in bad shape.
