Gas gauge not reading correctly?
#1
I recently bought a gas gauge for my ATV it rattles a lot and it does not read accurate. I filled my tank and it was at full mark after riding it for a few hours the gauge registered on reserve. So I went to the gas station to fill up and I had to only put in 1.9 gallons of gas to make it a full tank of gas. My tank is 3.5 gallons. So it was around 1 gallon off from the correct reading. Has anyone had any experience with theirs? I did by the correct Polaris part number. The 400 and 500 models take a different gauge. Polaris guy said the 500 gauge is shorter to make it fit.

Scramblerman,
Welcome to the club! The one for the 400 is pretty pessamistic too. I was riding two weeks ago and it said I was on reserve. I filled the tank and it took two gallons (four gallon tank). So much for accuracy, huh?

I have the same quad and I get that all of the time. It says RES when it still has at least a gallon left in it. I think it is just reminding you to switch to reserve. My street bike (2001 Suzuki GSXR 600) has a fuel light and it starts flashing at me when it is down to 1 gallon.

I guess I will have to geta gas gauge..I ran out of gas the other day...The guy with me was on a 350 Honda ,standard shift..he still had over a half tank when I had to go to reserve...But I had two people on my bike...but it it still seemed like a big difference..My bike just died going up a hill then wouldn't start even on reserve..We towed it to a camp then tried it later and after alot of cranking it started..

The gas tank on the SP500 is only about 3-4 inches deep below the filler cap, where the gauge is mounted. The tank is much deeper on the front section, but the gauge doesn't reach to this deeper part. Hence, the filler cap fuel gauge only measures the top 2 gallons, which is useless. I know that when my guage says "empty" I've got about 3.25 gallons left, but after that there's no clue. The shape of the tank even prevents the use of a dipstick because a straight stick won't reach the bottom. Has anyone devised a flexible stick, like some engine oil dipsticks?
