Scrambler bottom end???
#1
I have an '02 400 and just installed Ritter's stage 1 kit with an HPD trail pipe.I put the provided pilot jet in, a 260 main, needle clip in middle groove, the air box mods, and the plain clutch spring. My problem is I think I should have more low end.It is more or less dead for the first 1/3 throttle.I am guessing it's in my clutching. It kinda sputters around until you get the rpm's up and then hang on.Any ideas on what I should do to get some low end??
Thanks in advance.

at what your engagement is to? with that setup try to get it at around 3500 rpm,not more those engine have plenty of bottom-end power under 4000 rpm...before doing anything on the clutch first be sure of jetting properly by checking spark plug color a lot at all throttle position while your're first riding the new kit,if you have the pwk 39 carb, this carb need careful tuning with the air screw (by only 1/8 of a turn and less frequently) and is not as easy tuning than a mikuni flat side toughts...get a new set of performance reeds if not already done.good luck, enjoy, the 02 scrambler look very nice...

I went with the HotSeat stage 2 Pipe and kit, but was very impressed with the power. I lost a little at very low throttle, but was a big gain other then that. You do realy need to spend a little time on the jetting though. The recommended main jet was too rich for me, and I also needed to drop the clip one notch on the needle, but after that it ran very strong.
When doing this PAY ATENTION TO THE PLUG COLOR because these motors do occasionally burn pistons at partial throttle rideing. An extra insurance for that is when you are in that PART THROTTLE mode, every now and then blip the throttle wide open to keep the piston cooled off with fuel. I ran it with the stock piston and never had a problem.
Also if you want that lower engagement for more relaxed trail rideing, call Ritter and have them set you up with a slightly different clutch spring set up.

the pilot jet control engine mixture at idle to 1/4 throttle opening, the jet needle control from 1/4 to 3/4 throttle opening and main jet control the engine from 3/4 to wide open throttle especially.
grab your scram at midrange throttle then let it down shut the engine switch off, check your spark plug color...

I had some simular problems with mine. With the RCR kit did you only change the Front spring on the Primary clutch? Or did you change the Secondary spring also?
If you only swaped the frt spring, than your clutching is probably not the problem. (I would recommend a full HPD Aggresive clutch kit to match the pipe).
Anyway I had change my needle position (Clip down, needle up) and it really ran bad on the low end.
I acctually had to move my needle down, (clip up) after adding pipe, Re-JET and clutch kit and Airbox mod.
Play with your clip in a few different spots.(CHANGES ARE DRAMATIC)I am in the middle position with a 270 main jet. (RUNS GOOD) Plug is a little on the Blakish Brown side. with a 260 Main I was Whitish Brown.
I would rather run a bit rich than a bit lean. (NOTE:I also put a wrap on my pipe witch will cause me to run a bigger jet due to higher temps in pipe.
Took me a while to get everything dialed in.
