tug hill

Hey Arctic -
I don't really think the Tug Hill trails are that rigorously patrolled or even well marked for ATVing. Most designated riding spots in our area I've been to seem to turn the other cheek at double riders, as long as you're wearing helmets and on a utility-style machine. I would just stay off the main roads there, as I've heard about people getting tickets for riding along side the road. I'd also order one of those fancy maps for $5 they sell online that mark the legal trails there.

From what I've been told if they are patrolling they will leave you alone if you have one of those storage/back rest boxes for the passanger. If you know Tug hill, most of the sled trails are open to ATV's but not all. Like said get a map and go for it.

The Tug Hill and surrounding Lewis County Trails are patrolled by Lewis County Sheriff and DEC Police. On any weekend other than 4th of July, Labor Day or during a poker run you will most likely not encounter any police. I was stopped outside of Bratingham last year while riding double, they checked registration and insurance and made a point of mentioning it was illegal to ride double. They told me to have a nice day and off they went. Was riding in the Tug Hill area last weekend and it is very dusty right now... Hoping for rain this Thursday.. Also wanted to tell you almost all dirt and secondary paved roads are open to ATVs in Lewis County. The only township that is closed is the town of Lewis, West Leyden area. You can order the Lewis County trail map at WWW.NYSORVA.ORG. Have fun and check out Bratingham area, nice restraunt and gas available. Great rtails over there to.
