Yes even the great Honda will have problems once in a while no brand is perfect BUT look at these formuns and the complaints in each one POLARIS has FAR more complaints and breakage than any other brand out there. Which would you rather ride in the deep mud a chain driven Honda, zuki, kawi, or a BELT driven polaris that is prone to slippage when it gets wet. And what happens to a belt when it gets wet? It slips, and thats just for starters. Please don't bash other brands for problems before you look at polaris problems. I will put my Honda ( 250R ) against any thing that Polaris can put out from the factory

SandDraggin,

Do you have a clue? I guess not.

First off, conventional transmission quads are GEAR driven. That is to say that there are actually gears in the transmisson of your 250R, not chains.

Second, most Polaris machines use a belt as a primary transmission component, not as a final drive.

Third, from your name, I'll take it that you're a sand rider. Now as far as most every one else on the planet, we ride ATVs (that's ALL Terrain Vehicles). It seems that you ride a OTV or ONE terrain vehicle. I don't expect you to understand what a water crossing is as there are very few in the dunes so I won't waste my time and yours trying to explain it. However there is a simple method of drying the belt, should you get it wet (I haven't). Simply put it in neutral and rev the motor for 30 to 45 seconds.

By the way, speaking of transmissions, what ever happened to the weak second gear on the much vaunted 250R? How about a broken frame? Or maybe you haven't been keeping up with current events for the past decade, the 250R isn't being made any more.

Who in their right mind would buy a Polaris ?

From what I am hearing from other owners including Polaris owners, there seems to be problems ?

Engine, Drive Belts, Electrical

Is anyone having good luck with one, and if so, what model ?

I guess I am not in my right mind, as I bought a Polaris. And I am even worse then I first suspected, as I have had no problems with mine. I must be crazy!

I like my 1999 400 Xplorer....mow grass with it every week, and trail ride with it...its a real hill climber..however, Im to chicken to push it to its limit.
I like my friends Kaw bayou 220 also...but its kinda small and no where near as fun to ride as my 400 Xplorer. I did have a wet belt once. (ran thorugh a giant water hole to fast)...didn't know what to do but it cleared itself after about a minute ..but keeping up with everyone was a little difficult during the drying process.

Also, the speedo didnt' work from new. Turned out to be a bad connecter. The quad has been great fun otherwise.
Also have a friend who has a 300 honda..its a great quad to...(mines faster but on the trails no one has a problem keeping up). I love my polaris..but if I had a grizzly or a honda..I'm sure I would love them all.

I am well aware that the 250R is gear driven in the tranny and I was talking primarily about the belt set up on the polaris, but it is STILL belt driven secondary or not! Oh by the way I don't live with my head in the sand or dunes. I live and ride it the rocky, wood hills of New England states. There fore I do know what riding in water holes and mud is all about. I have ridin with all brands of quads and no one complains more than the polaris guys. Yes my quad is 10 YEARS OLD BUT I can still out run, out climb, and flat out power and polaris made from the factory!!!!!!!! Why is it the OLD 250R is still so dominate on the MX tracks of today? Beacuse it is still the best. Why doesn't polaris build a MXer to compete with a ten year old design?
I have had my old quad in the rivers with water over the tank (because I'm not scared to put it in the water.) Buried in the mud up to the seat and never had any problems with it, other than NORMAL maintance. I don't have a broken frame and never had a problem with second gear because afters years of riding my machine I wisely had my lower end rebuilt (new crank, tranny bearings, seals and had my gears checked.) I race at the local sand drags so I know what speed is all about! I am a honda lover but I would gladly take a Banshee ( which is a fast machine) over a belt driven quad any day. The only reason I had repiled to this forum earlier is because YOU were BASHING honda. I like to ride with any one no matter what they ride. Now you call me ignorant and tell me I am single minded and I'm a "sand" rider there fore I don't now what it is like to ride in the "real" world, like the woods or the mud. Now I am NOT here to say that Polairs is the worst machine out there, but when people bash other brands and say that the brand they ride is best, is when I get annoyed.

SandDraggin,

It didn't sound like anyone was "Bashing" anyone in the beginning of this post. Not once did 97TrailBlazer say anything to be considered bashing. He was simply turning the tables on riders of non-Polaris machines that tend to always respond " I've had my (fill in make) for (fill in years) and have NEVER had a SINGLE problem, you should have bought a (fill in make). Honda owners are probably guilty of this most, as they feel their machines are the most reliable overall. In my opinion, the point of his message is that one isolated problem, such as the A-arm on the Honda should not automatically cause all other riders to label Hondas as "junk" or poorly made machines.
