I just put in a set of Boyesen Pro Series reeds into my 99' Xplr 4x4's stock reed cage. I followed the recomendations and downjetted the main jet 2 sizes. After doing this it runs ok, but seems real sluggish off the line. Next I tried adjusting the needle clip position up one groove. This seemed to make things worse. So now I have put everything back to stock, besides the reeds hoping to get it running right. The only other mod I have done, is add a K&N Filter. Does anyone have any advide on getting this frickin thing to run right?

Ditchdigger,

Since you do have the K&N, you should have the xtra air needed to mix with the xtra fuel you are putting in the machine. I have a 98 Xplorer 400 with the boysen pro-series reeds and a K&N just the same as you do. I never touched the jetting and it's been running hard as hell for 5,000 miles. Otherwise if you are still bogging off the start, you may need a new needle and seat, or ask you dealer.

Not to be a smarta$$, but first off you should've purchased the V-force reeds, they're dyno proven better than the Boyeson's. Start from scratch and check your plug using the killswitch. Not sure if you're familiar with it. Start first at 1/4 throttle, then 1/2, 3/4, then wide open throttle. Hold the throttle constant for 1/4 mile, then, using the killswitch, cut the motor. After coasting to a stop, pull the plug and take a look. White is lean, black is rich, cocoa brown is perfect. Sorry if this was repeating info you already knew.

Modquad,

I thought you had to buy the reed cage also if you go with the V-force reeds for the Xplr 400? I didn't want to spend that much money, just wanted better than OEM reeds.

Thanks for the tips, I'll see what happens this weekend.

hummm,i think you should keep the stock jetting even more if you running k&n air filter with the power reeds, the k&n have increased your air flow through the engine causing a lean mixture, check it out...

Sorry about that Digger, I thought you had purchased a cage and all. I've only worked with the v-force units, because that's what all the dyno's were picking. Wow, I should get some stuff on E-bay, I have a set of the original V-forces just collecting dust. Once the Predator gets here, gonna have to do some cleaning. Like Scramblered said, you could be lean, those do help flow.
