1998 Explorer 400 Need Info!!!
#1
I am looking for opinions on an atv I just bought! Yikes!!! I haven't even taken possession of it yet! It's a Polaris Explorer 400 - 1998 model. I opted for a 2-stroke even though most people told me to stay away from them. It comes with 3 different jets for riding at altitude - which is what I need for elk hunting in Colorado. I also will use it for trail riding at altitudes from 5000 feet to over 12000. Any comments or suggestions are appreciated, even if I'm told I made a big mistake. It's in very good condition, and I bought it from a very honest and dependable person. Suggestions of addons like, racks, tires, winches, cargo boxes, maintenance are welcome!!!! thanks

I'm not trying to be rude......just helpful. There are pages of posts available, you just have to do a search. Let the keyword be "xplorer" and see what all comes up. I have a 2001 xplorer, and they are great bikes.

congrats, you got the most versatile quad on the market,it is so sad polaris have droped this one,you can do ALL with this 4 wheelers and beleive me you can have FUN too (2 stroke),back in '95 when they first
came out i put 5000 miles of pure rough riding through EVERYTHING i could ride to with,i even rode it in motocross climb hills sand fields,it is what an atv most be like with the fun factor of 2 stroke power and speed, when worked out put it in low range and you got an amazing towing response or mudding trail tractions, they're very friendly quad,i suggest to try the richest jet first cauze you seem to
be on high altitude, check spark plug color, the engine is reliable for maybe 8000-10000 miles if you take care on it.

Thanks Scramblered.....I feel better about the xplorer now! I was concerned about the altitude and 2 stroke, but there must be something to the fact that over 90% of the snowmobiles are 2-stroke. I'm going to give it a limited try out this weekend.
