Was doing the 1st oil change on my 1999 scrambler 500 today and was going through everything per the poor polaris owners manual and when I opened the air box to check the filter there was about a cup of engine oil in there and it smelled like gas and oil combined. Anybody have any ideas why?

Sprint,
Polaris 4-strokes just do that sometimes... They seem to do it if you've flipped it, laid it up on its side, been on extreme uphills or downhills.. They also seem to do it when the engines are new. Just make sure you don't accidentally overfill the engine when doing oil changes.
I have heard of people having the stock paper filter getting oil soaked and stalling out the engine. You can always change to a K&N filter for a little added security..
