I have a '98 sportsman 500 and four wheel drive does not work in high or low. With the button pushed in the light doesn't light up and the tires don't pull but in reverse it will work. When I hit the overide button in reverse, with the 4wd button pushed in, the light comes on and it works. I would like to know if anyone else has had this problem and what it takes to fix it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just found this forum and hope you'll could be some help. thanks a million Andrew

My 400 Xplorer did the same thing and I just replaced the hub fluid and that took care of it. I have put on another 700 miles and not had any trouble. I dont remember if the light was going on or not.

Check your shifter it my need adjusting.Mine did this on the last trip and I ended up useingn a bungee cord to hold the shifter forward to hold it in.When I got home I cleaned it and adjusted the linkage and have had no more trouble.Your override switch could be bad or have a bad connection.Get you a manual and test light and test the conections.

Take the switch apart and look at the wires something came loose. I had a friend that just bought a new one and his didn't work in reverse the switch had a wire loose.

Check the bulb and if it is not blown the awd switch could be bad.

on my sportsman there was a little switch in the shifter that had gone bad. i had to take out the four allen bolts and at the back of the housing there is like toggle switch looking thing with some wires coming off of it and that is what fixed it
