Default Belt Drive or Transmission?

Hi

I have a 2001 Polaris Sportsman 500 and when im in high gear and start to move theres a clunk and bump from the rear. It only does it when I start to move and goes away afterwards. It doesn't do it bad in low range, its more noticable in high range. Do I need to check a belt or something? Im new to polaris, I have always owned Honda but I like the comfort and power of the polaris and want to stay with them.

I've been told that it's the ebs making the noise. My 01 HO has done it from day one and it's got 2,900 miles on it.

I had a problem similar to yours on my snowmobile last year. You could have a couple of "teeth" gone from the inside of the belt. When they break off, the belt is not strong enough to withstand the sideforce of the primary clutch which causes a clunking feel as the belt turns. Just a thought....

I'm on my 3rd Sportsman (2 500's and 1 700) and all of them have had the clunk, usually felt mostly in the right floorboard when taking off from a stand-still.

It's just backlash in the tranny and is normal. If you think it's bad on your 500, go ride a 700, they really pop when taking off.
