2001 400 Explorer Swing Arm Troubles
#1
I traced my clicking problem to my left swingarm mount. Does anyone know how the %$#^ a person is supposed to get to it. It appears you have to pull the engine. It also looks like the bolt goes through the swingarm and screws into the trans. Any help would be greatly appreciated .

Hey burky,
Yeah, it is a pain to get to, and yes, the bolt runs through the swing arm and into a socket that supports the transmission in place. But you don't have to pull the motor, how ever you do need a clutch puller. You have to take off the clutch cover, and both the primary and secondary clutches. You will most likely need a clutch puller. $20 in a dennis kirk catalog or from HPD. Then you remove the back-side of the clutch cover and there is your bolt right there. If you have a clicking noise, sounds like your bushings in your swingarm might be shot. If you're gonna pull one bolt, just as well go all the way. I think the bushing kit for the swing arm is abour $80. Hope this helps. Also, check out www.partsland.com for a microfiche viewing of how this goes together...you can also buy parts on this site.

Burky. That swingarm bearing is a bugger to get too but not hard.Just dissasemble your clutch cover. Will probably have to remove footwell to do this. You most likely wont need any clutch pullers to dissasemble .Once you have the cover removed, begin by tearing primary and secondary clutches apart. There are bolts that hold each to their respective shafts. Then you will have to take the rear clutch cover off.The exposed bolts are self explanatory. Then you will be at the swingarm bearing.See I told you not to hard.lol.Good luck.

you don't really need to buy a clutch puller...just measure a bolt out so that it fits into the hole where u took the bolt out and then get the right size bolt and stick a hammer through the clutch so it doesn't turn and then just tighten the bolt till the clutch pops off...easy and cheap

Yes, You do need a puller or bolt (3/4-16)to get the primary off. Both clutches have to be removed to get the backing plate for the cover off. You'll need a 1-3/4 socket for the bolts that hold the swingarm on. Remove the rear brake caliper and tie it out of the way. Remove chain and unbolt the rear shock. Remove both bolts using the for mentioned socket and the swingarm will come off. After the swingarm is off, There is a large nut on the right side(when sitting on machine) of the swing arm(holds bushing in) that has to be removed. It is loctited on. I used a propane torch to heat this and the nut came right off. The bushings were $12 from the dealer. The bushings I took out were slightly different than the new ones. There were more grooves for the grease in the new ones.
