Scram 400 shift linkage rod/pipe problem?
#1
I'm having a problem with the shift linkage rod and the RCR midrange pipe I have. It seems that the pipe is coming into contact and resting on the shift linkage rod, thereby causing hard shifting and have to constantly keep tightening up the shift linkage bolts. Anybody had this problem with their RCR pipe and how can it be fixed if at all? I'm getting ready to order a HPD midrange pipe if I can't fix this one. I've even tried installing the shift rod upside down and it doesn't give me any clearance between the pipe and the shift rod that way either. Thanks.

Bayou, you can eliminate the shift linkage all together. Get yourself about a 6" piece of est. .250" aluminum. After removing the old linkage, you can match up the aluminum, or use lexan, or cardboard for drilling pattern. Since the trailpipes normally have a wider body over the trans, you might have to make a offset (90 degree) bracket. Just be careful with those style pipes not to burn yourself when reaching down for the sifter. Removes weight, and looks pretty good once you round the corners smooth and use a little Mother's aluminum polish on it.

Sounds interesting! I have a brother-n-law who's a great welder. Seen him weld damn near everything. Got a pic you could share with me regarding what you are talking about? It might be easier than him fabricating me something. Thanks for the info though.

Bayou, it does sound like modsquad has a good idea there. The pipe will fit without fabricating anything if you get it just right. It is a tight fit though. My pipe barely touches the linkage and it shifts fine. If necessary you can dimple the pipe a little without it affecting the performance as long as you don't go overboard with it.

When I put my FMF pipe on I had to move the linkage up to the second hole and then had to cut my plastic about 2 inches to the front of the **** opening. I was worried at first but, it works fine. The only thing is that the rubber piece that goes in the opening now won't fit because the hole is a little bigger. Other than that no problems. At least not yet.

My early picture doesnt show it, but I did the same thing. You could still mock the shifter to retain the factory look and use a homemade linkage on the trans. Once you get used to it, you wont pay it any attention. I do have a hard time going from the race bike to the trail bike, though. Keep reaching down to shift.LOL Bubba
