Depends on what you are wanting to do with the quad. If you are just leisure riding and putting around, then the 500 would be better. If you are looking for something to go sand duning with or want to modify and make really fast you'd be better off with the 400. As far as top speeds, I can't tell you. But the 400 will outrun a 500 in a drag race.

Yep, if you just want to ride around and not get too serious, then the 500 is for you. If you want the speed and possibly go faster later, the 400 responds great to minor mods and can be modded to almost any extent you want. The ride and suspension is about the same on the machines. the 500 will be a touch heavier, but will not require as much long term maintenence, such as a top end rebuild after a few years. The 400's are faster out of the box and provide lots of wheelie fun (if you like that sort of thing).Bubba

From my experience, stock for stock the 400 and 500 tie...the 400 just 'feels' quicker. I would listen to what these guys already told you. If you want to keep it stock, then get the 4-stroke. If you want to mod the h*ll outta the thing, then get the 400. If you really want a fast racer, you can mod the 400 out, but it would be a heck of a lot cheaper to just get the Predator.

Its all basically what you perfer. If you like easy power go with the 400 but if you like easy trail riding and less maintenence go with the 500. They are both great machines and fun to ride. My 400 will constantly beat my neighbors 500 in a drag but his in great in the mud/water/snow. Hope this helps.

Well they say hind sight is 20/20
I have 2 400 4x4 Scramblers. I am very VERY happy with both.
I have a friend that has a 2002 500 Scrambler X. I had my 400 4x4 Piped, rejected, and re clutched and his 500X 4x2 has a White Bros muffler. They are very Close.
The performance difference between the two are not HUGE.
Yes a 400 will beat the 500
The 500 Low end is actually more fun for Trail riding due to the low end torque, With the 400 you find your self always on the throttle or off because the power band is strongest in the mid to top end.
Not to mention My 400's now get bad, VERY BAD, fuel mileage now that they are modded, The 500 does really go in the fuel mileage department.
Stock VS STOCK I would have to say 500 is the way to go.
Easy of maintenance I would also have to say 500 is the way to go.

In hind sight, for my riding styles ( mostly trail riding ) I would rather have the 500.
We do find ourselves going to the dunes 3 or 4 time a year but I have rode that 500X at the dunes and it is still a lot of fun, The 400 probably gets its biggest advantage there because you are able to use that powerband there. If you plan on doing minimal dune riding I would go 500.
