Default 1996 300 explorer overhual question

Has anyone overhualed these motors before. I'm looking for some more power out of this bike but not sure what I all need. I want more power but also want reliability. What about clutches and aftermarket pipes has anyone tried these. I ride mostly in the rocky mountains of Alberta, Canada a altitude between 3000 to 7000 feet and temp. between 70 degrees to 90 degrees. The trails are mostly rocky but there is some muddy spots as well. I also use the bike for hunting. Hope this helps any suggestion would be appreciated.

Bore - really only if you need it. unless you are going to modify it a good amount. Then you probably should atleast go to a forged piston.
Pipe - definately if you are after more performance. However, an aftermaket pipe will never be as quiet as the stock one.
clutch kit - definately but the clutch kit has to be set-up so that it works well with which ever pipe you use.
Reeds - You don't have any to even change so ignore this part.(HPD won't even do the conversion on a 300cc motor.)
Porting - yes, if you are really after that much more performance but watch it, the porting should be done so that it will work with the pipe and desired clutch kit.
Gear change - in all honesty doesn't do to Polaris machines like it does everything else. For you though, you can't. This could seriously mess up your AWD. Stick to your stock sized sprockets.

You can really wake up these motors and get some good power but it isn't really something you jump on to go out to the woods to hunt. Their is a rather complete list of my mods on "My Page".

Check out www.rittercycle.com and see what they have. Rick Ritter has lists of available mods, as well as price lists. He also has one of the best reputations I know of, in terms of getting a person RELIABLE horsepower gains. The performance packages are sold in 'kits' with the appropriate clutch mods to match the power curve of the engine mods.
