my 4x4 doesnt work in reverse on my 2000 scrambler 400 4x4. I never noticed it until my last ride. I was on a down hill and had to reverse up the hill. NO 4x4 in reverse, i thought I had lost all 4x4 but when I got turned around 4x4 was working in forward. I also noticed I didnt need to use my reverse override that time either. I'm guessing a have a electrical problem. Any thoughts?

 

You need to hold in the override button in order to have 4wd in reverse.

even with the override button pushed no 4x4 in reverse. Also the thing would run full rpms in reverse w/o needing to push the override button.

 

A faulty override button will cause the exact same symptoms. 2 things happen when you select reverse 1) the gray/orange wire is grounded and this cuts the 4x4. 2) when you push the override button, you remove the ground (giving it back 4x4) from the gray/orange wire and ground the purple wire which gives you full power. The problem is in the switch or a broken wire. Trace the 2 wires I mentioned from the handlebars on down and look for damage. I am not sure of the colors or the functions of your model/year because it has changed at least 3 times that I know of, but regardless of color/function changes, the problem lies there. Another thing to check is some models have a plugin connector for the 2 wire to the override switch, if this was partially disconnected and not making contact, you would also have the same symptoms.
