Polaris Sportsman 700 shaft knock!
I just broke down and bought a new SP 700, (with my wife's blessing). I notice a knock or pop right after putting it in gear and starting to accelerate, which sounds like it's coming from the shaft drive. I am wondering if there is something wrong with it. I have had a Magnum 425 since 1995, chain drive, and have no shaft drive experience. Is this normal?? or is my machine about to lock up and break...Any help is appreciated.

Polaris Sportsman 700 shaft knock!
Now that I am more used to riding my 700 I have found if when I go from reverse to forward hi range if I give it a little gas and allow the clutch to engage before I take off it barely makes any noise but if you give it the gas hard and then the clutch engages it does make a noise. I hardly notice it at all in low range. The dealer told me about this noise when I first test drove the 700 and before I bought it. Apparently it is a normal noise.

When Polaris went to the EBS clutch, they also went from plastic rear clutch buttons to steel ball-bearing rollers. What you are hearing is the metal-to-metal contact of the rollers hitting the helix. The plastic buttons would absorb the thump, so you never heard it in the older machines, plus the design was a little different. What you are hearing is normal, and the nature of the machine. If it eases your mind, Polaris has used these rollers since about 2000 in the Sportsman models, and I only know of one instance ever of the steel rollers failing.
