Ridding double with kids
#31
The road is strait, no one else is on it, it's smooth, I bet the kid would love to feel the speed as I peg the throttle!...
But what if.....
...something mechanical goes wrong? Like a flat tire or a unnoticed crack results in a broken A-arm?
...an animal jumps out in front of me?
...the kid slips or does something that distracts me enough to lose control?
These thoughts weigh on my mind, and the kid gets a slower ride. After all, if I am to teach him to ride responsibly, part of this is teaching him to ride sensibly.
Chose you this day how you will ride, as for me and my house, we will ride safely and responsibly.

Time to clarify something, I've gone 40mph 1 time(once) with my kids on my sportsman... My kids have ridden probaly 20 hours with me on the quads. I'd say 95% of the time we are goin under 5mph because the kids are curious about the surroundings (water hole, little mud bog, etc.) I have always been safe with my kids on the quad!!! Common sense.

By Common Sense I mean don't go on busy trails with kids aboard (I can ride on my own property without the threat of other ATV's) and don't go 40 Mph. Come on, If we followed every saftey rule out there we would probably not be having any fun. Kids really enjoy riding with their responsible parents and thats what really matters.

Use common sense and be careful and be glad for the time with your kids. I personally try to only ride with one of my kids on an atv. While I wouldn't want to recklessly endanger my kids but, the world is a dangerous place. Risk is part of life and living. In my work I've pick up kids hit in the street, on the playground, on athletic fields and courts. I've run more kids injured falling off a horse than an atv.
Put helmets on the kids, ride carefull. There are more kids who have been harmed more in life because parents don't spend time with them than will ever be injured riding double!

i dont think that riding double is safe , but when i am on my own land i ride with my wife behind me and just remember that she is there and ride a whole lot slower than i do when riding solo . i also take my nephews for rides on my quad as well . mind you i only take 1 at a time with thier parents approval , and take it easy . i wouldnt take a passenger with me on a organized trail system or other peoples property where there would be a possibility of encountering other atvs or the such . i feel that i ride safer than alot of people that i ride with though

Predator Man,
Now thats a different story. Personally, I dont really see a problem with putting around. You made it sound like hauling the mail with your kids on trials with no helmets was a regular occurence. Still be careful..

I bought a harness that holds my 2 year old against my stomach sitting on the seat in front of me. It allows me to ride with both hands when I need to without being afraid she will fall. HJC makes nice light kids full face helmets. Don't forget the goggles either.

My three year old rides in front of me, she wears a full face helmet as well I installed a soft snowmobile mountainbar for her to hang onto, and yes I go slow. If you want to talk about unsafe, how about those child carriers behind the back seat of a bicycle, can you say splat. Common sense rules the day
