Default Magneto?

Alright guys and gals, here's the delimma.....bought a new battery about two months ago. Charged it up overnight after filling it up with fluid and now it's almost dead. Pulled it off, checked it and it has a slight charge to it. Started up the quad and put the volt meter to it without the battery on and it's not registering on the meter. So, give me your opinion as to what the problem is and what kind of cost am I looking at. I have torn down the quad and replaced the piston and rings completely by myself, so I am mechanically inclined, BUT this seems to be an electrical problem and after having worked on cars for while, I know how electrical problems can be hard to track/trace down. So give it your best shot. What do you think it might be and do you think I should try to fix it or just bring it in to the shop? Thanks again for the help.

First off. Never disconnect the battery and start your quad. The amperage has nowhere to go, the voltage regulator freaks out and you will blow out all your lights and possibly damge the reverse rev limiter. Start by reconnecting the battery and start your quad. With the volt meter attached, rev the engine. You should see a voltage of about 13.2- 14v. This will confirm the system is charging.

Have any idea what the voltage would be at idle?

It won,t be spinning fast enough to charge properly. I would suspect a slight increase from what ever voltage you have when the quad is turned off.

Snowride is right.........also check to make sure all your wires are plugged into your voltage regulator. They could have gotten knocked loose and be causing your problems.

Thanks for the help guys. I'll double check the connections and then test the voltage while the bike is at 1/4 to 1/2 throttle.
