Default Noise from 600

O.K. this past weekend I took my bike (a 600 & 500 HO) on a 9 hour trail ride with some pretty intense rock climbing. I ran in low most of the day and now when I put the bike in High and lightly push the throttle and then let off it sounds like the belt might be slipping or something to that affect. The noise is coming from the right side of the bike by the foot brake. Also, is it normal for the bike to have a slight clunk (that can be felt in the floorboards sometimes) while starting to accelerate? I notice it more when I am in high on a trail that is slightly rough. The noise can also be heard sometimes when driving down the trail and you let off the gas.

Now for the 500 HO questions. We usually ride double on this bike (I know it's against the rules) and after riding for a while the suspension isn't raising the bike back to its original height. Could this be the shocks going bad? Is there a way to tighten up the suspension on the rear so it can handle a little more weight? Also, isn't the 500 supposed to sit as high in the rear as the 600? Our 600 (2003) sits a lot higher than the 500 (2001). The a-arms are also at more of a steep angle on the 600. Give me any information you might have. Thanks.

I have heard that the clunk is normal for that model. If the noise is on the right side, I don't believe It would be the clutch. I would check the chain out real good and make sure there is no interferance with it and something else. I would also check the oil amount in the Tranny as that can give problems sometimes if it is too low. The spring for the 500 may be adjustable, mine is on my Scrambler. The spring can be raised and lowered for more/less preload. Mine is a cam type that you twist with a special tool to raise/lower it. Someone else will have to help on the other questions.

idboss,
i'm not sure about the clunk noise coming from the right side. There is a small rubber bump stop for the exhaust on the right side, almost right behind the gear shifter, that gets harden over time. The heat from the muffler will harden the rubber and cause the bike to sound like a hissing, rattling noise. All it is, is the muffler vibrating on that hard rubber. I found this out when I took my quad to the dealer. My 700 started to make this noise around 200 miles.

The clunk on take off is a normal sound from the EBS. As for the 500 suspension it is not the shocks going bad but rather the springs losing their spring. If you ride 2-up often, I would highly recommend getting stiffer rear spring or at least cranking up the preload to max.

I am an idiot, sorry guess it can be your chain if it is shaft drive huh?? It sounds like it may be some kind of vibration or something rubbing somewhere? But I don't think it is coming from the clutches as you can hear those noises from the left side only.

So what side is the belt on? I was under the impression it was on the left side, but am I wrong? How much would new rear springs cost for the 500 HO?

Springs go for around $50 CDN or $35 US.each. Left or right? I suppose it depends on what you consider left. It would be the left hand side if you are sitting on the quad (facing forwards)

Yes, it is on the left side, you read something wrong or I typed it wrong. I believe the springs are around $30 a piece.
