Default From a 500HO’s Trans to a 600/700’s Trans.

Has anyone tried changing the Transmission out of a 500HO with a 600/700’s Transmission? Are there any kits for this? Is this even possible?

I have just about had it with this h-pattern!! Today I was riding, got into kind of a twisted situation (the front tire was on an incline and the back tires were on level ground), and it wouldn’t shift out of low!! I had to rock it for the longest just to shift to neutral!!! I thought I was going to break the shifter trying to get it to shift. This has happened before with my ’96 but I thought the 2002’s would have solved this problem. Has this happened to anyone else besides me? Has this happened to anyone’s 600 or 700?

Don’t get me wrong. I love the way the X is setup (2500lb Warn Winch, can put the winch on the front or the back, wheels, tires and power). But I am beginning to hate the transmission.

I don’t know. Maybe I should just trade it in on a 600 or 700 but I have yet to see the plates that you can change the winch from front to back and vise versa for the 600 or 700s with just a few pins. This is one of the features that sold me on the X.

Any and all input on this is appreciated.

I would try playing with the linkage and adjust your shifter. Mine needed adjusting and it took me a long time to get it but haven't had a trouble since.

It won't bolt-up. I suppose it could be MADE to fit, but just getting a 600 would be far easier, and probably not a lot more expensive.

Anything can be done but at what cost? Assuming you could bolt a 600/700 tranny onto your 500 you would also need to purchase the rear shaft and the rear gearcase, along with the 2 rear driveshafts. I doubt any of this will fit the 500 frame. I smell a trade in.

Thanks for the info guys.
Well, I guess I can forget about changing transmissions. I didn’t realize the drive trains were so different between the 500 and 600/700. I will try adjusting the linkage for now.

Has anyone seen the brackets for the multi-mount winch for the 600/700s (couldn’t think of the name before)? This is a great add on! Especially when you get into situations where the winch would be unusable on the front (no anchor point).

Snowride you are right. I smell a trade in too. Only if I can find those multi-mount brackets.

they will never make a rear winch for 600/700, or all of the 04'sin fact, because the winch sits up in the front bumper and there would be no way to get it out, how much you asking for that X?

If you are really in a bind and the front winch is inaccesible, you can tie a rope to an anchorage point and wrap it a couple of times around one of the the rear axles. You now have a 40hp+ winch as a standard feature. Careful because if it's stuck real bad you could pull only the axle out of the mud.

kblazk,

I better hang on to the X since the newer ones don't have the multi-mounts, it only has a little over 200 miles on it and it's just getting broke in good. The stuck shifter and a low-idle problem are the only complaints I have found on the X (minimal). The idle was fixed in about 2 min. (adjusted the throttle on the handle bars). Everything else has been great! The X is a super machine with more power and speed than I actually need. I never thought I would be saying that!

Snowride,

Isn't that kinda risky? I think I would just break out the ol' shovel and dig a while before risking the destruction of an axle.

That's why I said when in a bind. It works great on a solid exposed axle such as the Xplorer but could cause damage if you overdo it with the irs models. Sometimes you may be in a predicament and have no access to shovels or help and as a last resort I would do it.
