bad solenoid??
#1
on a 2001 s'man 400, is the solenoid mounted to the side of the battery box? the battery is fine but the electric start don't work. there is power going into the solenoid but not coming out(i think..i used a multimeter to test. is that how you test a solenoid). the cable from the battery to the solenoid showed power. the cable coming from the solenoid to the starter showed nothing w/ the key on and off. when i start it with the recoil all lights/indicator lights work..thanks a ton for your help!!!how much are solenoids, if thats my problem?? thanks again...mike

The solenoid should have 3 wires going to it. Two big wires, and one small one. One of the heavy wires will come from the battery, and be 'hot' all the time. The other heavy wire should go to the starter, and will only be 'hot' when it recieves voltage from the thinner wire. If there is no voltage down the thinner wire while pressing the start button, check for a bad switch, or circuit breaker. If there is voltage down the thin wire, but none down the 2nd heavy wire, check for poor solenoid grounding first, and if it seems grounded properly, it is likely a bad solenoid.
Also, Polaris uses self-resetting circuit breakers instead of fuses. They are the little square boxes in the wiring harness ahead of the battery (on my Xplorer, anyway, not sure where on all models). If one of those goes bad, you will lose voltage, as well. If I am not mistaken, there are 2 breakers on my Xplorer. Again, not sure how many on other models.
Hopes this helps
