hot seat 700 sportsman tuning updates

we have seen alot of the 700 sportsmans varying in speed alot from machine to machine. also if you put on a winch, its suprising how much the extra weight in the front will slow you down. i was surprised. but for you guys who are fine tuning the hot seat speed kits, here is some tuning info. if you use a dyno jet kit, use the richest main jet and go one clip richer on the needle than dyno jet recommends. also even if you don't have a dyno jet kit, and you have installed the 175 main jet and raised the stock needle, you can access the fuel mixture screw on the bottom of the carb. it has a brass plug in the hole to cover it up. you can carfully drill it out to access the fuel mixture screw. we have found this to be a key factor to getting your modified 700 sportsman fine tuned. a 1/4 turn out (richer) or in (leaner) will make a noticable difference in accelleration and throttle response. i suggest getting a tachometer, we have the inductive pickup digitrons at hot seat. they work nice.
i usually shoot for 6100-6200 rpm while accellerating, then when you run out of gear it will go up to the rev limiter at about 6500-6600rpm.
we have found the team roller clutch clutches to work very well with the 700 sportsman with our hot seat speed kit and even on a stock machine. it had better accelleration, it had noticably better throttle response, and we even picked up 2mph of top speed. plus if i guy has a scrambler and does alot of jumping, you won't smash the buttons plus you'll have better performance.
if you just purchased the 700 pipe, make sure you do the hi-flow intake as well. the stock intake is just to restrictive for the pipe to work properly.
we have been testing carburators and will be running a 41mm flatside pretty soon on the 600 and 700. the 40mm mikuni we were using works very well, but the throttle sticks sometimes just above idle. that's why we are looking for a better one.
