Default WHATS THE BIGGEST GAP YOUVE CLEARED?

ok, i've got a question for all u guys who ride tracks and jump doubles. how do u know what speed to go? i was gonna try a double once, but i was scared to of comin up short. on my BMX and mountain bikes i usually jus go faster than i need to, but on quads i'm too scared. i saw a vid of travis pistrana goin faster than he should of the first time he tried this one double at a freestyle comp. and he landed on the launch of the next jump. how do u judge ur speed????

I asked the same question to my old teacher who rode motocross, he said that he would just ask everyone with his type bike what gear they were hitting the jump in. Then he would hit it. That should atleast give you a general idea. Hope that helps.

at certain tracks, it would be hard to launch a quad to the takeoff ramp of another jump, so all i can say, is get in a gear that feels right(might be hard for some people to judge) and peg the gas, it is always better to over shoot the ramp than to undershoot it evedentally. i overshot a 15' double by about 3' and i came out ok, i really didnt plan on overshooting it that much, but i was better off being over 3' than under 3'. BTW, if possible, make a run in a gear you plan on hitting it in, going beside the ramp, that should help a little.

its hard to say how fast you need to go there is to many factors involved. size of jump, wieght of you & machine, power of your bike, etc. the way i always did it in the 19yrs i raced i would hit it slow in practice single jumping it then you can about judge how fast you need to go to double it. see where you land & your speed & add what you think you need to clear the double & add a litle speed. just like it was said before its better to overshoot then come up short. just remember one thing dont back out once your commited to doubling. i've seen alot of people get hurt that way. once you've raced a while you develope a natural instinct of the speed you need. you dont even think about it you just go. hope this helps

yeah, in most cases it is better to overshoot than to undershoot a double, except in the case you can see in my pics I have done both on that jump, and they're about the same. After the landing ramp it quickly cuts back up again and it was the very first time I had ever jumped a double. I was scared before it really bad but for some reason all of a sudden I got the urge to hit it, and at the last second didn't think I would have enough speed so accelerated alot and well overshot it. I can now hit most doubles perfect on first or second time and it's second nature, you eventually get a feel for it. I know I didn't get the quad to long ago, but I hit doubles and crap every day for like 2-3hrs I just practice jumping on my neighbors big track. Biggest double I've hit was about 35 ft but it was made for dirtbikes. And the biggest table was about 45 but could easily go higher.

hey, thanx for the info. maybe someday i'll get up the ***** to try a double. i jus saw a bunch of pics last night of this one race where like 15 people snaped their durablue axles on the same double. also, i saw a pic of Dana Creech when his fuel line came off and the quad died half way up the launch. basically, he cleared the jump, and the quad didn't. he broke like 3 bones, including his tailbone. i think i'll stick to jumping dunes for now. lol
