Help, I still cant decide!
#1
I am in the market for a new sport quad. I always want and have to have the best, newest thing out. But, I can not decide trx450r or yfz450. I know the yfz450 is faster on the top and the honda will get it off the line. How much of a difference is there on the top end? Obviously these quads were not made to strictly drag, I keep hearing mixed reviews about handeling of these 2. I here that the honda is front heavy, but more comfortable of the two, does the yamaha out handle the honda? If so, how much would an average trail rider be able to feel the difference? Does one jump better than the other, or hill climb better? I really like the front fenders on the honda, but think overall the yamaha looks better, looks however is last on the list. What about gas, I have heard the yamaha is terrible on gas (somebody define terrible, 40 miles/tank?) I have yet to hear how the honda does on gas. I really like the honda with seperate trans and engine oil, seems like this will really help in the long run on the honda. I know neither of these will be good mud bikes as are no sport quads, but is one better than the other, seem to have the same ground clearance. I am 6'2 190lbs, I have heard the yamaha riding postion is cramped compared to the honda for those with long legs and arms, if this is the case the honda is holding the upper hand because I have pretty long arms and legs. How do these things perform at slower speeds in tight trails? I can get the honda for 5999 otd, and the yamaha for 6199 otd, so they are pretty close in price. But I was thinking with the $200 price difference, that leaves almost enough room for the HRC kit on the honda. I know this topic has come up a lot but am looking for up dated info now that the honda has been out for a couple months and the yamaha almost a year now.

No doubt the YFZ can whoop on the TRX. Also I think your info on theYFZ having a bad start is not correct. I have seen YFZ's at the dunes smoke TRX's both off the line, mid, and top end.
But if you are a die hard honda fan than the TRX isn't a bad machine either, but you said you want the best out there.

I picked the TRX, after puting in quite a few hours on a friends YFZ. Honda front heavy? Usually somebody is in here whining about it being to light. Just right in my opinion. If you are a trail rider, it will need to be geared down a little however. I found the YFZ to be a MISERABLE trail bike. Neither machine is good at technical trail riding. These engines like to rev, and both do best in more open trails and wide open country.

I have a pred, and it is slightly modded and it runs real well. I love it, yes it could use a few changes here and there to suit my needs..but nothing if perfect. I'm not sure by what you mean when you say the clutch is picky?? If you mean shifting without the clutch...yeah it doesn't like speed shifting very well... and nuetral can be hard to find at times, but other than that it is a very durable and strong machine in my mind. I have yet to loose to anything but banshees, not saying I have raced much that was fast either.
