Trust the opinions of folks who have put hundreds of hard a$$ miles on their mahine!

I own both these bikes. I choose the Z for trail riding, and the 450R for open country. The R loves to rev (just like your YFZ, so you know what I mean), and there is no way this motor likes to be lugged down. So, it likes to run out in open country. Sounds like that's your application, so I think it is a good choice.

The Z is no doubt the best all-around machine there is. If you did a lot of trail riding, it would be my pick, but that doesn't sound like your application.

Dealers must be different in your neck of the woods. I have yet to purchase anything from my dealer that I haven't spent at least an hour of seat time on first. I'm talking sport bikes, quads, and personal watercraft. It's never an issue. I've purchased at least 8 units from them in the last fifteen yrs and test rode every one of them prior to signing.

Seems a little odd to me that any dealer not let you test ride one.

I'd be interested to hear some more replies on the test ride subject. Don't know why, but it just struck me as kind of funny I guess.

Sorry for hijacking this thread. Maybe I should just start another one on this topic and see what everyone has to say.

I've had a chance to ride a Raptor, KFX, YFZ and a 450R, If you like the light weight 2 stroke feel of the YFZ then you'd like the 450R. The YFZ and 450R feel a lot lighter than the Z and a whole lot lighter than the Raptor. The specs say that the YFZ and 450R are only 20lbs lighter than the Z, but I question that after riding both. The power on the Z comes on mid-high similar to the YFZ and 450R but there is just less of it, where as the Raptor has more low end torque.

If I were buying new I would definitly buy the 450R out of this group. Certainly you can modify the Z or Raptor to compete/beat some 450's, but it's the lighter weight of the 450R that's attractive to me.

BTW: Most dealers seem to have a little room to negotiate on the price of the 450R. You should be able to get one for $5600 - $6000 OTD.
