NEED ADVICE 400ex vr chinese brand cougar 250
#1
i have a situation,
i have a 2000 400ex its old and used, and has a few probs. I bought it not wanting to work on it all summer...i wanted something ready to ride that didnt need a whole lot of fixing up. well low and behold this thing need some major fixing.
my question is, has anyone heard of the chinese Cougar 250?
im thinking of selling my 400ex for this mainly because its brand new and i dont expect to have many probs. i know its a 250cc but will that be worth the fact that its brand new?? i dont want to have to spend MORE $$ on the old one...just to be ride-able
secondly, how much of a difference, power wise, is the 250 and the 400. is it noticeable?? will i be dragging along? i dont race, i just go out to the trails every now and then....
im just interested in the fct that its new and reliable.
thanx in advance

id fix the 400EX. what kind of major work are you talking about it needing? you are better off with it than you are a chinese quad plus you can always find parts for it; maybe not so with the chinese quad. powerwise you prob wil get very bored coming from the 400. fix the 400. or it is too far gone get another used 400; they are pretty decently priced. id buy a used 400 over a new chinese quad anyday. ive seen the chinese ones just give too many problems from running right, starting right, they are heavy, cracked frames (brand new), etc.

What is wrong with the 400? I would fix that, because you will be much better off in the long run. These things aren't terribly hard to work on, at least chassis/suspension type stuff. You can get the motors rebuilt/hopped up, if you need motor work, it is worthwhile to look into a 416 overbore kit. That gives you more power yet keeps reliability. Most of the Chinese quads need a lot of wrenching sooner rather than later. Conventional wisdom around here is to remove pretty much every nut, bolt, and fastener, locktite them, and reassemble before even starting it the first time. Even with that, the percentages are still high you will have some sort of problem keeping you sidelined within the first year of ownership.

Welcome to the forum Tumblr400!
Keep the 400EX and forget about anything from China. NOTHING currently available from China is even worthy of the discussion...The 250 will be a pig compared to the 400EX power wise.. and as a bonus you'll have real problems with the Cougar compared to the Honda.
What is wrong with the Honda? ask a few questions and we can help you with them.

Yep, ditto with everyone so far. Keep and fix the Honda, and stay far away from the Total crap that is produced in China. Night and Day difference.

I'm with the group - fix the 400ex and save yourself the headache of a Chinese toy.....
Trust me, the China toy might be running now, but it won't be for long and you will be fixing that all summer anyway.......
If you don't want to fix it all summer, take the 400ex to a dealer and get an estimate - you might be surprised how little it will take to give you a ride that will be fixed and done for another 250 million hours of riding......
