Help me choose which ATV to get!!
#1
I have a bit of a problem. I don't know which type or sport ATV to get. I ride a 2008 Yamaha TTR-230, and I really hate it. It does all I ask, but I don't like how the gears are. 1st is to low, and 2nd is a little to high. A friend has a trx250ex, and the things really pretty awesome. It does everything the dirt bikes can do and even maybe a little better. I wouldn't mind the 250, or maybe a 300 or 450. I know more about dirt bikes than ATV's, so I thought I would come on here to see what some people think. My limit in price might be around $2500. I would prefer a 4 stroke, with a electric start, but wouldn't mind a kick start. The quad would mostly be used for trails, and riding in fields.I might do a little hulling of a wagon around the yard, but nothing huge. I really would like it to have reverse! If it doesn't have reverse, then I probably wouldn't like it to much. I'm not planning on racing with it. I would like a utility ATV but the nice ones are out of my price range.I don't really care what brand it is, as long as its Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda, or Kawasaki. I'm about 5"9-5"10 and 130 pounds. I'm not in a hurry to get one, but I might try to sell my dirt bike this fall, and try to look around. Please respond with any thoughts. I really don't know what to pick from.

Look into the yamaha raptor 350, there great for trails, with reverse. Or you could try the Honda 400ex, there alright for trailing, and they can get up to 63-66 mph stock, considering your lighter than an average rider, you may get it to go faster. The 400ex and 350 raptor both fit the description.

I think if you get a 350 raptor, 300ex or something similar i think you will quickly be wanting more power. I would suggest a Suzuki Z400 (also Kawasaki KFX 400 and Arctic Cat DVX400, same quad with different plastics sold by those brands), can get pretty nice ones in your price range. DOHC liquid cooled 4 stroke, electric start, reverse, plenty of power, great for trails. 400ex is nice also, but only the newer ones have reverse and newer ones may be out of your price range. Would have to check. I think reverse is only on about 05 and newer 400ex's. If you want even more power the raptor 660 is right in your price range and are great trail machines with loads of torque and power, have reverse also.
If you are content with the power of the 250ex, a 300ex is a good bit quicker and has reverse. Great machines. 350 Raptor and its predecessor the 350 Warrior are nice also. If you want a utility machine, there are some in your price range that are nice. Polaris Xplorer 400 is nice. It is a 2 stroke but has electric start and reverse, 4x4, racks and all that. Used to have one, they are good machines. Yamaha Kodiak 400 is another that comes to mind. Honda Rancher maybe? So there are some options out there if you want to go the utility route.

For what you're looking for, a 400 sounds perfect, the Honda 400ex would probably be the one to get, plenty of production years to choose from, plenty of power, easy to work on and not too hard to find a good price on one. If you want a little more jam, the Kawasaki 400 would be the way to go, I've heard good things about the power, but I've never actually ridden one so I couldn't tell you for sure.
