I just bought the Z400 and I'm curious, how durable are the chains on sport quads? Do they need replacing every year? How much maintenance do you need to give to the chain? Do they come off allot? I have never owned anything chain driven so I don't know this stuff.

It mostly depends on how much & how hard you ride & how you maintain your quad.

The chain is very tough, Keep it lubed, clean & properly adjusted & it'll last a longer time.

When you do replace your chain replace both sprockets at the same time. You'll destroy a new chain in no time with worn sprockets!

Make sure that you use chain lube. WD40 or motor oil will break down the rubber o-rings in the chain and ruin it. Also, when you clean it, don't use a wire brush or anything abrassive that can damage the o-rings.

To clean it I was just thinking about using the garden hose or do I have to clean it better than what the garden hose can do?

That'll be ok. Maybe hit it with a soapy spounge or towel also. You're really just trying to get the heavy debris off, nothing more. Once you are done washing it, ride around a little to get the chain warmed up before you lube it.

Thanks for the info. I'll probably have many more questions once I get my quad next week.

don't lube your chain right after you wash it, you will trap water particles inside the little nooks. bad.
yes, a chain is best lubed warm, but let the chain dry 100% first.
