Since you only want a slip on I recommend the HMF. Seems to be the best slip on out there for the money and power. DO NOT buy a Yoshimura slip on, because if you later on decide to buy the head pipe, it will not fit, and you will be stuck. Get an airfilter (K&N with adapter), throw away that airbox lid and remove the snorkle, rejet, and you will hardly recognize your bike!

Go with the HMF slip on, it offers the most bang for your buck. You can add the headpipe later. Get a better airfilter from www.nossmachine.com, I recommend the uni filter setup..

If you want some very cheap power, either just remove the snorkle baffle and rejet or remove the lid and rejet. Be sure to up the pilot and get an adjustable needle ($15) from Alba as well. Then, drill out the peashooter and wall behind (on power for pennies z400 page, full instructions) and it will be a whole new machine.
The stock pipe, once gutted, isn't restrictive. The biggest gains on the Z are from the intake and jetting mods. So, save your $$ from the pipe and get a dyna ignition and/or hotcams and you'll have the fastest sleeper around.
It's just my opinion, pipes are overrated for the Z. Intake and jetting is where you'll find your free hp. And you'll notice all pipe manufactures tell you to remove the lid and rejet anyhow. So it makes you wonder if the pipe really is that much better or are you getting your new hp from the intake mods.... Don't equate more noise with more power... just the sounds of an aftermarket pipe makes people think there's more power, but what they're feeling is the intake mods mainly.
My jetting recommendations:
Lid on, baffle removed, peashooter mod:
25 main, 3 turns out, alba needle at #4 from the top, 145 main.
Lid off (or holes in lid), snorkle or baffle removed, peashooter mod:
27.5 pilot, 2-2.5 turns out, alba needle at #4 from the top, 155-160 main
For about $30, you'll have an entirely different machine, and it won't be overly loud and annoying.
