Default z400? removing the airbox lid

Well guys I'm no mechanic I'm just wondering if you remove your airbox lid without rejetting do you get any power gains and will it hurt the quad if you don't rejet? About how much power would it add if any? Can you really feel the difference without it?

I am no mechanic but the injection of that much additional air without jetting would cause it to run pretty lean. From the feedback I have been given running your engine to lean over a period of time can damage it. I have taken off the lid, snorkle, added the yoshi comp full pipe setup (which I really like) and put on a pro-flow kit and K/N filter. Unfortunetly i did this right after break-in. I thought there was a HUGE power difference...especially from low throughout the mid-range...but again, i did a little more than just remove the airbox and I didnt really ride the quad much after the breakin period stock...

that was the first mod I did, but I put a 155 mainjet in it.(dirt wheels rec.)

In dirt wheel mag march 03, they did a pipe shootout, and they also did a dyno run without the lid and rejeting it.
You only gain about 1 hp, but it comes into the power a lot sooner then stock. 1 hp doesnt sound like much, but you can feel it when you only start with about 30.

definetly could notice a power gain.

Bosox, What did you do for jetting? I just added the same pipe and filter and I'm trying to figure it out.
Thanks

Thanks, I'm getting more into racing and I think I'm going to go with some suspension mods and strengthening my frame first. Then I'll get started on the power, I'm still trying to get good on the stocker. I want it to handle like a go-cart. Thanks for the info 1Fast03z.

I pulled my airbox lid without rejetting and it wouldn't even rev-up. After putting in a 155 main jet and adjusting the idle up a little it runs great.
