Well, if you are going to totally overhaul it, od the obvious new bearings and seals. Maybe put in a Barnet clutch kit, have the cylinder and head ported and polished. Put good reeds in it. Wiseco piston. Thats about it. Unless you want to spend some money for a big bore kit or something.

I've had my '86 racer since '88. Never even did the top end till about a year ago when my crank seals went. My old main bearings were pretty bad but I rode it back to the truck for about 10 minutes with 2-stroke oil in the tranny 'cause it lost all the oil through the crank seals.
The guy who rebuilt my engine has been building 2 strokes for 20 years. He recommended that I don't port the cylinder 'cause the increase in power would not justify the decreased reliability. Since the early racers don't have a powervalve or external reed cage, there's only so much additional power that can be created with engine mods. He also recommended against installing fiber reeds 'cause you gotta pull the cylinder off the bottom end to replace them.
Congratulations on the deal. The shocks, pipe and skid cost more the 800.

Yeah, but if you are going to have the motor apart anyways, that would be the time to put reeds in. I had my quad mildly ported, and it is just as reliable as when it was stock. I would recommend some porting and polishing so it can open up a bit and breath. as usual dont go nuts, but it really helps to at least clean up all the casting marks. Shave about .010 or .020 off the head. It is enough to gain some power, but not too much to wory about blowing a gasket. and besure to use Suzuki gaskets because I tried the cheaper route and got burned.

I have seen anything you can think happen to Lts. Dont get it ported the 86 is just a ported 85. Any bigger exhaust port it will trash the motor pretty quick. No support for piston. Ive rode ported 86s 85s , it aint worth the power increase in those. Get somebody to split it check clearence everywhere get a rod kit, cause that one, if its stock is probobly about shot. Throw a new clutch in also.
