What kind of riding are you into? THis will dictate which way you should go with your gearing. If you like the trails stick with the stock 13t front, if you like ***** out riding then I would suggest stepping up to a 14t front, the Zilla can pull it no problem. As far as performance mods, a pipe, reeds, air filter and carb mods will really wake up the 500. I would suggest the LRD pipe, but they are no longer in production. As a second choice I would pick the paul turner pipe. This with a 39 or a 41.5 carb with Boyseen reeds and a K&N filter will make the Zilla feel like a new beast.

i hope to feel the difference. i had gone down a tooth on the front sproket. and i regret it. it really hurt my top end.

I am running an FMF Fatty w/Answer pro exhaust, I'm happy with it.

I usually run a 14 tooth in all around situations, but drop down to 12 in the sand, because I run tall paddles.

Haven't heard anything bad about Barnett clutches, but you really should get new springs. I run a WB clutch with a hinson basket.
