Eiger: Backfired LOUD... Now Runs Crappy
Hi Guys,
(03 Eiger, New, 4x4, Automatic, 400 miles, had 100 mile service)
I was in the woods a month ago, lost power, engine started sputtering, then it stalled.... Then BANG.... it backfired as loud as a 22 cal gun.
I let it sit a minute and after it turned a bit it started up and I have been riding since... But, EVERY time I turn the ignition OFF it backfires... but NOT loudly like the initial one. Also, since that first backfire I must let my quad warm up for 5 minutes before putting it into gear or the engine will stall... the weather had become only slightly cooler so I'd be surprised if this engine warm-up is necessitated by lower temps.
I cleaned the air filter.
I just started it after 2 weeks of not having time to ride. I had to put it in full choke to start it and keep it running and had to leave it running in full choke for 15 minutes before putting it in gear or it would stall... then I had to put it into a fast idle to keep it running like it was purring. The temperature here has been 60's during the day and 40's at night.
With that said, I used to use regular, low grade gas. I switched to the mid-grade to quiet the noisy valves that supposedly all Eigers have... Might this be causing the trouble?
So, there you have it. I'm not particularly mechanical yet- so feel free to talk to me like the newbie that I am.
Thanks,
Bill

Eiger: Backfired LOUD... Now Runs Crappy
i put a jet in my vinson and left the intake boot on the carb crooked and the clamp popped off when i tightened it. it ran much the way you are describing. 2 weeks ago we went riding and a guys big bear intake boot slipped off for some reason and it wouldn't run.

I had a similar problem with my 03. The dealer found a kink in the carb vent hose. After checking this forum back in the spring I found it was something several people had gone wrong with their eigers. Good luck, mine has run like a top ever since.

Eiger: Backfired LOUD... Now Runs Crappy
Ever since i purchased my '02 eiger 4x4 new back in 02, mine backfires too whenever i let off the throttle. It does it every now and then but sounds like a gunshot, I wonder if this can hurt anything? It still runs fine but just backfires every now and then...

Hey, Dbuz... what jet did you change? The pilot Jet? My Vinson
backfires too when u let off the throttle. Also, It will start without
being choked, when cold. And the damndest thing is once started,
it seems to run better with the choke on. Anyone else had this
problem? Too Lean? Too rich?
