I do all my services myself. (If I had bought the warranty, I probably would take it in.) I'd only take it back to the shop if it was something "major" that I don't feel comfortable with. As for scheduled maintenance, I don't follow the manual at all. I think it depends on the riding that you do. I ride a lot of mud/rock, so I check everything once a month (other than the pre-ride stuff) and try and change everything every other month.
