I have a 96 KQ and have never had that problem, so the first thing I would do is to check you lights when it happens. If the lights are dim or off it is probly a dead cell in the battery. If light are normally bright, it sounds like a loose wire somewhere. You might start by checking the battery cables for good connections or
corrosion, but if you have lights, that's not likely the problem.

My first impression would be the ignitition switch itself. The switch can be placed in postions that do not line up properly. Example on Tour de Forest I thought the headlights were on since the switch was in that position (or so I thought) but I was able to move it a little more to get the lights on.
Second impression would be the neutral switch itself. It might not be closed all the way whent the transmission is in neutral. Starting it with the pull starter might jar it enough to close it.
Hope this helps.

Sounds like it could possibly be your neutral switch. I had the same problem with my Timberwolf. When the neutral light would come on it would start fine, but when the neutral light would not come on I had to pull in my brake lever to activate the start in gear switch and then it would start right up.

It could be your reverse switch located under the airbox. You can test the reverse and neutral switches using a factory service manual. You might be able to obtain photocopies of the procedure if you don't want to buy the manual.
