The fastest way to tell a 85,86 from an 87 and is the motor color. If is a satin color, not painted, its a 85,86. If the motor is blue it is an 87 and up. The 87 and ups are the better machine, but for $200 I would get any of them!

i just saw a basket case(literally) '87 in the paper here for $950 i seriously debated buying it, i ought to tell my riding friends around here about it too.

if the quad you're looking at has been re-painted, the above may not help much
look at all frame joints for cracks, bent frame tubes, etc. especially on the bottom side of the quad. look at the front shock and suspension mounts i had a friend crack his there, but he rides a little more extreme than most(accidently sent it off a 100ft cliff once.)the rear suspensionmay be suseptible to this damage too. my friends is re-welded and running again. the other thing i would look at is if the quad threw a chain it may have cracked the engine case where the chainguard mounts. welds are common fixes for this, and less expensive.

go get it, order a factory manual and a clymer manual for refence. get it together and have fun!!!
