None of the jugs interchange. Putting in a later model motor will require frame modification. LT500 motors only have 5 gears. If you put one in though you would not "need" 6 gears.

BTW

Why is it that you need 6 gears?

The 87 and later LT engine does not fit well in the 86 frame, but the zilla engine goes in with very little modification. You WILL need to extend the swingarm as well as the A-arms and the front shocks, but a properly built 250/500 hybrid is a very formidable weapon.

I'm running a 14 tooth front sprocket and I often find myself in 5th looking for another gear.

You can probably get a bigger front sprocket than a 14. A LT500 uses the same type front sprocket and comes stock with a 13 so I would expect they are made at least up to a 15 tooth. If not you could go to a smaller one on the rear. What all have you done to that 86 LT to spin a 14 tooth gear. Mine had the stock 12 tooth with smaller tires and just barely had respectable acceleration with that. It didn’t have too much done to it though. Just a FMF silencer, K+N filter and a shaved head.
