I'm hearing 'wild' rumors (of course this happens every year) of new Kawasaki 2-stroke quads and a new Yamahopper YZ426 engined quad. My question is after someone finally does release a pure race quad, will my 14 year old racer become worthless? It's a known fact that Honda 250R's have only held their value (like quadracers) because production was stopped a decade ago. Like dirt bikes, for example- a 1989 CR250 is worth very little (even in cherry shape), but a 1989 TRX250R can bring upwards of $4 grand (in good shape). Is this going to happen to quads after someone releases a new race-type? Or will the high cost of new quads make our older ones still worth something?

I would think there would be less of a demand for the old bikes, therefor lowering the older bikes resale value. Good for people who want to buy them, bad for people that own them.

 

I agree with Dominator. It wouldn't be a good investment, but look at all of our options now that we never dreamed would come about just as recently as 5 years ago. Yes it sucks, but we don't have to ride 15 year old technology anymore if we don't want to. It's a matter of preference and choice.

 

I only ask this before I spring $500 or so for a new swingarm. That will put me at around $2 grand in my 14 year old ride. And I certainly don't want to have any more in it than I can get back out of it- maybe I can't recover all the money that I put into it, but to be able to get most back out would, of course, be good. And most certainly I would be selling it if something new came along-and it was'nt $7 grand + like a DS650.
This could go two ways-our old quads holding thier value because new ones will be so expensive, or older quads losing thier value to the new ones...
The upside is like someone said-we won't have to ride 15 year old technology anymore!

There is the flip side of the coin. Being that 2-strokes are getting booted out the door due to emissions. Would that make ANY 2-stroke engine worth more because it's going to be rare, and thus a sought after item? Or will it make them worth even less, because they'll have so many laws and rules about using them people will yank the 2-strokers out and toss in a 4-stroke just to be able to ride. A very interesting question you bring up- it's one I've asked myself alot. I'm not sure what the true correct answer is. Heck, maybe the price of 2-strokes will stay put with only inflation to devalue them.
